Wayne Shorter plays and composes amazing music and has been doing so for many decades! Here’s one of his great works from Speak No Evil.
From a “music theory standpoint”, Witch Hunt is a great song where great musicians use the C minor Blues/Pentatonic Scale (among other things) in many unique and inventive ways to great effect!
Transcriptions
Here’s some great transcriptions of Herbie Hancock’s solo. These are great learning/practice resources, but I do always (try) to learn stuff by ear, too (those it’s challenging for sure)
When I wrote this page, there were great transcriptions available on the internet – but they were removed, probably for copyright type issues. (From my understanding, you can share chord changes but not melodies, etc) Please keep in mind that the artists and their families may still receive income related to their works. If you end up listening to something a lot it may be a good thing to actually buy it (or some other work) if you haven’t already done so!
In terms of me personally, I am working on my own transcriptions, etc … I have a ways to go …
